The “Roșia Montană Marathon” competition is organized by the Pachamama Romania Association.
Pachamama Romania is an association whose mission is to create a sustainable, fair and fulfilling world. Our projects contribute to changing the modern worldview focused on consumerism by raising awareness of the interconnectivity between human and nature.
It was founded in 2011 at the initiative of Alexandra Postelnicu, who also became the president of the association, following her participation in the Pachamama Symposium “Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream” of the US Alliance.
The Pachamama Alliance, a global alliance present in over 80 countries, was formed out of the strong desire of the indigenous Achuar tribes of the Amazon jungle to save their land from destruction by oil exploitation. This initiative was joined by a group of US activists, including Bill and Lynne Twist and John Perkins, and in 1995 this collaboration took shape as one of the most active and complex environmental associations in the world.
Pachamama is a word from the Quechua language spoken in the Andes Mountains and means Mother Nature/Mother Earth, specifically including the sacred presence of the Earth, the Sky, the whole Universe. As Mother Earth cares for us and nourishes us, we must protect her. The Earth must be protected and conserved, and each of us can take an active role in this process.
To achieve our mission, we have developed several projects, among them the Rosia Montana Marathon.
Another very important project, on which you can find more information in another section, is Rights of Nature. This is a legislative project that aims for the recognition of Nature as a Living Being with legal rights.
The symposium “Be Part of the Change” (adapted from the English name “Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream”) is our most important educational program to awaken people’s consciousness and together change the dream of the modern consumerist world.
The aim of the Symposium is to create a socially just, ecologically sustainable and spiritually fulfilling human presence.
It is a comprehensive educational program that we run in schools, as well as other venues, through which participants raise awareness on:
- “Where are we?”,
- “What has led to the present situation?”,
- What can we do? and
- Where are we heading?
At the end of the event, each participant takes a pledge to contribute to a better world.
Alongside the Symposium, we also run other educational projects in our partner schools to make students aware of the role and importance of nature in their lives and how they can take simple actions to help protect it. To this end we organize presentations to students and provide them with a transformational guide to inspire them in their actions.
